  Got a Winchester Model 1886 from my dad who got it from his dad. Story goes my grandfather bought the rifle as a 40-82 but shells would not work. Took back and gunsmith who said it was marked wrong at the factory and remarked it to a 45-70. That?s what it is today. Can this be true.

  Your pic are a little dark for me. They rifle looks like a nice shooter, but I shoot everything I have.
  
  There are 33 86's listed in 45-70. Look at completed auctions for real prices.

  The overall graded condition is approximately 0 - 10%, and that is well below what the deep pocket collectors are looking for. The remaining value is as a "shooter" grade classic old Winchester. The fact that it is a 45-70 is helpful to the value, as is the fact that it is a bona fide "Antique".
  
  The realistic value of the rifle is $1500 - $1800, though there are dealers out there that would try to sell it for $2500 or more.

  Yes, it can shoot modern manufactured smokeless powder ammo, but you should avoid the 300-grain jacketed bullet loads. Stick to the factory 405-grain bullet loads with a muzzle velocity in the 1300 - 1600 fps range.
