M1 Garand .308
Does anyone have any trigger time behind a .308 M1 Garand? Specificly the CMP Special?
I don't care about the collectible aspect of the M1 Garand as much as shooting one.
I have read that the .308 Garands are great shooters, they might have an edge on the .30-06 Garands. Plus the .308 Garands have a new barrel.

The CMP .30-06 Specials will also have a new Criterion barrel (a manufacturer which who's barrels I am not fond of), so there is no advantage gained in the choice of .308 vs .30-06 based on the barrel. 0 -
I don't know anything about the CMP, but various types of 308/7.62X51 Grands have been around for years. Both with 308 chambered barrels and sleeved 30-06 barrels. I shot one years ago and couldn't tell the difference between 308 & 30-06. Accuracy between both, would depend more on the person pulling the trigger then the cartridge. 0 -

My experience has been the same as rufe-snow's.
For a .308 shooter, my choice is an M14-clone; shorter, lighter, less muzzle heavy, easier to load, & less recoil than the M1 rifle. Yes, for history & nostalgia, nothing beats a real USGI M1 rifle; but, shooting it can be a pain ---- in the shoulder & fingers.

I sleeved a Garand to .308. It worked fine with Venezuelan 'Cavim' surplus and Winchester white-box, but the extractor would pull through the rims on the imported steel-cased ammo. The additional freebore did not affect accuracy. I picked the loosest-chambered Garand that I had, for the conversion. 0 -

I have a M1A, like you say, great shooter. If there is no advantage to .308 in the M1, then I might as well just get one in .30-06.

I have a CMP 308. The chamber is not sleeved! It has a new production Criterion barrel. Shoots like a dream. There is a plastic block that is in the bullet guide to prevent you from loading a clip of '06!

There is nothing a 308 can do better than a 30-06. For most stuff the 308 is close enough. With the adapter sleeve you can shoot 308 in your 30-06, they don't make one for the other way around. 0 -
.308 is universally proven to be vastly more accurate than .30/06, and in the old rifle, also imposes a lower work load on the rifle.
All the major studies agree, without exception.
Every single test M1 I have is in the newer, shorter, more efficient, more accurate cartridge, which, since .30/06 has now been militarily obsolete for more than three decades, is easier, long term, to acquire as surplus. And yes, 7.62x51 is functionally the same cartridge.
There are about 200 published studies comparing the two cartridges, about fifty dealing with the Garand. There is, after all, a reason why the M14 was adopted, and it wasn't just balderdash!0 -
By the way, I have owned about 200 .308/7.62 Garands and over 600 .30/06's. My run-of-the-mine, ordinary .308's would outshoot the full-house competition .30/06's. And they would do so firing ordinary military ball, whereas the .30/06's were shooting Federal 3006GM or my best handloads.
That's a HUGE difference in day-to-day accuracy, and many studies show similar results, albeit more emphatic.
Everyone I know personally who has tried both has come to precisely the same conclusion.
In short: There is no reason to build or prefer a Garand in .30/06 except pure nostalgia.0
