colt gold cup date
I checked the references listed at the top, and they didn't help. I picked up an almost perfect gold cup today, a 70 series. No box, but no touch up or refinish, and appears unfired. Can someone help me with a date. It is 70N681xx.

All I can tell is that it is later than 1976 which is as far as Proofhouse.com goes and before 1983 when the series 80 came out.
It does not come up on the Colt lookup site. Few do.0 -
Is it nickel plated? The Blue Book lists 70G43001 to 70G73000 for 1974. The only way I can see for the "N" to be in the serial number is if it's nickel plated.
EDIT #1, Your right Harold, I went digging on the net and found this.
"In the book "Colt, an American Legend" by Wilson, the table of serial numbers says that the year 1977 started with Gold Cup serial number 70N40401, and the year 1979 started with serial number 70N66934.0 -
The best that I remember from when I was young is that the N in the serial number was for a national match frame. I wonder if it could be that the numbers run the same but just substitute the letter on the list. It appears that they changed the 70 to the end of the number after 1976. It is blued, and looks as perfect as the day it was made. 0 -
Blue Book Pocket Guide (2008) lists 70N66934 first number for 1979.
70N80735 for 1980. Based on that reference...1979.0
