Colt Revolver Question
A co-worker brought in his wife's revolver this morning and asked about its value. It is in its original box, albeit worn, complete with the JC Penney price tax of $79.50. The revolver is a Colt Detective Special, 38 Special with a 2" barrel. It has the silver raging stallion emblems on checked wooden stocks and a light strike of a raging stallion near the cylinder release. It is obvious that this revolver spent its life in the box. There are flecks of rust here and there on the frame and on the barrel near the sight. Only a minor amount on the cylinder. There is no evident turn line. Sorry, I am not able to post a picture The serial number is 96442x. Can someone provide a range of value for the revolver and the DOM? Thanks for your help

What was the model number of a Colt that would fire Long Colt, rimmed .45 and ACP. I have read that the rimmed .45 can be fired in the Long Colt revolvers will the length of the cylinder cause the accuracy of the weapon to be poor.

I think you need two cylinders. One for the 45 Colt and one for the 45 Auto Rim or 45 ACP with "half moon" clips if you want them to extract with the ejector rod. There are now full moom and 1/3 moon. A long jump to the rifling is not conductive to accuracy. 0 -
The Model 1917 that they made for the U.S. military during the First World War, could fire 45 ACP on 3 round clips, or 45 Auto Rim cartridges. Because of the rim thickness, and use of the 3 round clips, of both these cartridges. The headspace was substantially greater then the 45 LC, it wasn't possible to also fire that cartridge.
Some enterprising aftermarket gunsmiths after the war tried to fit the Colt with an auxiliary cylinder for the 45 LC. This was a delicate operation because the cylinder stop on the frame had to be altered to accommodate and function correctly with both cylinders. Unless the gunsmith was a pro and knew what he was doing, didn't always work out.0 -
I know you ask about a COLT however you may be thinking about the S&W model 25. For the most part S&W model numbers are for chambering for one cartridge only. However the model 25 came in one configuration for 45ACP and 45Auto Rim but also came in another configuration for 45long colt. The model number was the same but you could not interchange ammo between the two. 0 -
I know of no revolver that will shoot all three of .45 ACP, .45 AR, and .45 Colt without changing cylinders.
Any of the .45 ACP double action revolvers back to 1917 will handle .45 AR, that is what it is made for.
It is possible to gunsmith a .45 Colt double action revolver to shoot .45 ACP without losing .45 Colt capability.0 -
Yes, not only the M1917 model, but also the Colt New Service. I have a New Service in .45 ACP; I use full-moon clips with it. It is a very nice shooting revolver. 0
