Muzzel break makes my ar-15 too loud
I have a Stag Arms model 3 with muzzle break. The first time I ever shot it, my ears were ringing for the rest of the day. I'm told that a muzzle break reduces recoil but makes the rifle louder.
Does anyone know if I remove the muzzle brake, will it be less loud?
Also, will it be legal in New york state as far as barrel length? It would be a PITA to hunt with ear plugs.
Man was that loud!

the ar15 doesn't have very much recoil to start with. i would take it off in favor of a flash suppressor. p.s. i don't know the laws in your state. 0 -
First: Don't shoot without hearing protection.
Second: Forget the plugs, use electronic muffs. Caldwell makes a slim profile pair for around $30 or less depending on whatever sale is going on. They can be found at Midway (usually on sale) Make sure you get the slim ones because the regulars are too thick to be able to get a good cheek weld on a rifle while wearing.
Third: Leave the rifle alone. Leave the muzzle break alone too.
Fourth: Hunt with the electronic muffs too. They will block out the loud noises (gunfire) and amplify the quiet noises (animals moving in the woods)

If you live anywhere in the USA, including NY state, the legal barrel length is 16", minimum.
In NY, the muzzle break must be blind pinned, and welded over the pin, so it cannot be removed. There can be no access to a threaded muzzle end of the barrel, on post 1994 Ban weapons, in NY.
That said, it can be removed by somone competant, in doing so, and replaced by a thread protector, and blind pinned, and welded.
Seeing, you most likely have a NY state compliant rifle, your muzzle break is most likely pinned(as well as th collapsable stock) from the factory, distributor, or dealer. You will need somone who is well versed in doing what you wish, to make it happen, without harming your barrel.
You could also look for another upper reciever assembly, that has no break.

In NYS, configuration of your AR-clone is determined by when it was manufactured. You failed to give us that information.
If you bought it from a NYS dealer, & it had the muzzle brake on it, then it was likely required by law. Alter a restricted firearm in NYS & you risk your freedom.

Less loud and probably less legal. That depends on how long the barrel without brake is, and maybe when your gun was built.
Also, just removing it may be difficult, since its likely pinned and/or soldered into place.

All guns are loud without ear protection and its wise not to fire them without ear protection if you value your hearing.
I think if you were able to replace the brake with some other extension of equal length you'll probably be legal.
You may be able to have the entire BARREL replaced with a longer one. . .but that will cost you a few bucks. You can also just get a different NY-compliant upper and put that on your rifle, but that will probably cost even more bucks.
You can always use sound-enhancing electronic muffs for hunting, if you like.0 -
The rifle was made June of this year and is NY compliant. So from what I'm reading, my best bet is to purchase electronic muffs for now and watch for a barrel without the break.

IT IS A HUNTIN RIFLE!! I have cleanly killed deer with one, using te proper ammunition.

The bad part is, that the barrel is 16", most likely including the permanantly attached break...It is most likely a 14.5 inch M-4 barrel with 1.5 inches of break added to it to make it legal. Cutting any of the break off, would make it an SBR. It needs a permanant muzzle extension to make up an extra 1.5 inches.

A well equipped shop could cut the actual brake off, leaving a stub to cover the threads that so offend your rulers.
If it is one of those fako m4s, it would be simpler just to buy a new barrel without brake or threads. I have an 18.5 with no muzzle appliance that does just fine.0 -
I seriously doubt it's muzzle brake. More likely it's a flash hider. Also most unlikely it's a flashhider on a 14.5" barrel. All the AR carbines I've seen(unless specifically described as being 14.5") have a 16" barrel PLUS the muzzle device. Whether a 16" barrel with the device removed is legal in some sheet hole state like NY is your problem.
Yes the muzzle device increases the perceived muzzle blast or noise. Several of my hunting use rifles only have a thread protector.
No, I don't use hearing protection while hunting with long guns. I do when hunting with the 44 mag handguns.0
