My 11-48 16 ga does not have a split brass ring. The spring keeper is installed on the mag tube on the muzzel end. Works just great. Best

"the bases of the shells are concave to a ridiculous extent."

Does that refer to the flat base with the head stamp, or are they bulging above the rim?
In either case I don't see your friction setup causing this.
You may have an over size chamber, a headspace problem or the gun is firing slightly out of battery. Could also be that the bolt is unlocking to early

The friction piece for these were originaly made of bronze. As was mentioned in your previous thread try one for a Rem 11 or an A5.

the bases of the shells, with the headstamp.

When this old gal was brought to me, she didn't have anything on the mag tube but the spring.

It sounds like you are missing a part. Mine has a cup on the end of the recoil spring that the sleeve compresses in. The idea behind it was that the setup would automatically compensate for different shell velocities.

Shoot me an email and I'll send you some pics of my setup so you can compare it to yours.
