Model 99 Takedown

How would I know if I have a "takedown" rifle? My M99 is a 250-3000.

  To quickly tell, just look at the forearm. Takedown models have a sliding latch instead of a single screw to hold it on.

  As TWalker said, the takedown model has a sliding latch. In addition to that, the takedown model has an extra piece of steel on it, between the forend & the receiver.

  I imagine that the shotgun barrel is attached the same way that the rifle barrel is attached. If it is like a Winchester takedown levergun, then you first open the breechbolt, far enough to pull the extractor out of its groove in the barrel (to prevent breaking the extractor). Next, it looks like you remove the forend, then unscrew the barrel from the receiver. Then, you screw in the barrel that you want to use, and replace the forend. I am guessing about all of this, since I have only seen a couple of Savage 99s in person, and both of them were solid-frame versions.

  BigLoop: Since you've got those 99 pictures on here, can you try to explain how that .410 barrel is attached?
  
  EDIT: I've seen one of these set-ups as you've pictured at a gun show. That rig on the middle of the .410 barrel looks quite different than the rifle barrel. That's what makes me wonder how the barrel/fore end goes on there. I believe I read somewhere that, with the shotgun barrel, the Savage 99 is a single shot: True?

  That's a nice take down.
  
  I haven't seen a 410 extra bbl in a long time. The one set up I do sort of remember was a 303 Savage/410. I think it would work as a repeater from the mag. I think most others work as single shot.

  Savage takedown's had two types of barrel installation. Some were full-thread and required you to screw the barrel into the receiver all the way. Some were interrupted thread and you inserted the barrel into the receiver and turned it 1/4 turn to lock it. Both had the same type of forearm locking slide.
  The 410 barrels were all single shot, as the shot cartridge wouldn't run through the magazine.

  no sliding lock on mine, just 1 screw on bottom of forestock. thanks to all for all the info
