"Takedown rifle"

I often see Winchester lever-action rifles listed as "Takedowns".
What does "Takedown" mean?

  As above, it means you can easily break the rifle down into two main parts for easy storage and transport.
  
  Some of the oldest of these takedown levergun were manufactured prior to 1898 and are considered "antiques" under Federal law (ie, by Federal law they're not even considered firearms, and can be shipped without benefit of an FFL in many jurisdictions).

  Incidentally, I just noticed that Ruger has introduced a takedown version of its perennially popular 10-22 semiauto .22LR rifle, so the old concept seems to still have currency, I think.
