    It appears to me to be a Model of 1842, made in the Mutzig armory. Obviously been refinished. A relatively small percussion pistol of this type would have been issued and used by the Gendarmerie/Police/Border Guards, rather then Army or Navy,IMHO.

    Question about the "refinish" wouldnt the markings all be faded or lost when you refinish the wood?

    Your going to have to trust me on this. A 163 year old muzzle loading pistol in "uncleaned" original condition. Is not going to have the appearance, or be in the condition, of the one your selling.

    Check out GOOGLE images for photos of military percussion pistols. To get a handle on what ones in factory original condition look like. As the time frame of their manufacture and use was severally limited. To approximately the 30 years between 1835 & 1865, their should be a lot of them still in original condition.

    Metal somewhat over-cleaned. Wood maybe a coat of varnish or wax but not refinished - too many old stains, bruises, etc. evident. But for a bit over done metal, prime collector condition - in my experienced opinion.

    NO offense to rhmc24, but "cleaned" is a dealerspeak, euphemism for a firearm that doesn't have it's factory original finish. In my experience a knowledgeable collector won't have anything to do with a gun that has been "cleaned" unless it's dirt cheap, or a rare variation that's a candidate for professional restoration.



    EDIT #1, It's commercial type refinishing makes it a tough call, value wise. Collectors want this type of pistol in the condition of the ones shown in Spider's post. Maybe $300 to $500 as a wall hanger/conversation piece for a man cave?

    Problem is that high quality replicas of similar pistols are being made in Europe now. To be viable it would have to be priced less then them.

    Rufe-snow is pretty much in the ballpark at $300-$500. European firearms just don't do that well in the U.S. unless they're tied to American history like the Revolutionary or Civil Wars.
