Compact 1911's
I like buying off brand guns when it comes to pistols I might not keep or shoot a lot. That being said, I'm lookin at gettin a compact 45 and not sure which one to seriously look at. It WOULD NOT be a carry weapon since my Glock 23 has that position filled quite nicely. I've had to send back STI's and Kimbers and so the sermons about the quality of high end/big dollar 1911's just quit sinking in and I'm all about getting a low end and building it up. I've also considered a Springfield compact variant. I'd like to hear a bit of feedback on it.

How do Kimber's, Springfield's, and Colt's compact 1911's stack up.
Mostly interested in reliability.
I have been looking at Colt Compacts, CCO, Officer, Defender.
Not as familiar with Kimber and Springfield.
Consider 3" to 4 1/4" slide maximum and not looking at the Commander.

All kind of 1911A1 clones coming in from Turkey and the Philippines now. Sold by different distributors under different names, take your choice. Various ones have been discussed on this forum previously. You might consider doing a search to pull up the relevant threads/topics.
The basic model Springfield comes from Brazil, likely it will cost you more the the Turk or PI clones, and not be a plugged nickel better.0 -
Dollar for dollar, one of the best kept secerts in sub sized 1911 type pistols is the Star PD 45. $400 will buy you a nice one if you shop, they are aluminum framed, light to carry and with the addition of a Wolf spring kit, make a nice little pistol. After market 7 round magazines are available reasonably priced. I have used one for a cooler weather carry gun for years. Shoots whatever I feed it, shoots em straight and every time.
There are always a few on the auction side.

In all seriousness, is there any OTHER point to a compact .45?
Obviously, you're not using this for "serious" target shooting or hunting, either. If its just a "plinker" for the range, then does it really matter what brand it is?0 -

Hardly an "off brand," but reasonably priced. You can't go wrong with a Ruger SR 1911. 0 -

I've purchased 4 Armscors (Rock Islands) 3 Turks, and 2 Springfields, so far. All are 1911A1 Government copies. The parts on the Armscors and the Turks interchange with each other and with my Colts (I haven't tried the Springfields), but the machine work, including internally, seems to be better on the Turks than on anything, including the Colts[:(]. Off-brand, aint so 'off', any more. And the price of a Kimber can get you a bagfull of them.
BTW, I've never owned, or wanted to own, a 1911 that was more reduced in size than a Colt Commander, and those still worked fine. Maybe I've just heard too much that 'micro' 1911's get to be problematic.0
