Buffing

I stopped by the gun smith today to pick up some parts for my revolver and I asked him about bluing a little .22 and he gave me a price of 250.00 and the .22 is worth 100.00. I told him that I had the rifle cleaned of all finish and he said that if the rifle was buffed and ready he would give me a nice discount. Buffing seem to me to polish and I just can't get it through my head that is what he is talking about. What does he mean by buff and how should I go about finishing up the rifle for blue.

  Buffing is very skilled hand work using different progressively finer abrasives on a cloth wheel(s).
  
  Go to Brownells site, the sell all the necessary equipment, (it ain't cheap). They might also have some videos on their site demonstrating the processes.
  
  Do a lot of practicing on junkers, before you work on something you want to keep.

  many times you can get the same effect by hand polishing and many times you have to hand polish to make it look right. polishing prior to blueing is most of the work. whatever it looks like before blueing it will look like after blueing or worse. many times people think the blueing will cover blenishes, it won't. many times it will accent them. take your time. curves first flats last.
