slower rate of fire
At the risk of much ridicule and harrassment, I subject myself; Case in point is a PPS-43 with overdrive. It cycles at about 600-700prm and the owner would like to slow the cycle down a little. Is it as simple as replacing the buffer/charging/return spring with a less powerful one? The gun is so simple it seems the spring is the cycle controller and propels the bolt forward after each round is fired. Seems a less powerful spring would slow the process down?

Does it have a bucker plate that the bolt bounces off? If so perhaps a rubber bumper to slow the bounce. To speed up a tommy you put two plates in. Maybe a stiffer spring too.0 -
A lighter spring will do it. A heavy spring makes it cycle faster. 0 -
Thanks guys! Yeh it's got a rag pad on the end of the spring. That's what originally sparked the weak spring idea. I changed out a worn flat pad for a fresher one that looked slightly thicker and the gun seemed to slow down. I'll try the rubber pad idea next.[:D] 0 -
I haven't had anything to do with utos in about forty years, but I recall during the trial & error testing of the M16 we were told that the buffer determined, in general, the cyclic rate of fire. 0 -
The spring does not return the bolt on all subs. The bolt often bounces off the back of the receiver so hard that it beats the recoil spring to battery.
Installing a stiffer spring may slow the recoil of the bolt and therefore how hard it returns. A buffer will also slow the bounce. A very effective buffer would seem best used with a weaker spring, though.0
