    VERY CAREFULLY [:I] . I do know some people refer to as INKED but I am almost sure no ink is involved . It does highlight the engraving and most times only on high grade guns.

    edit If you work changing oil on diesel engines just wipe your hand on your engraved guns then wipe them down with a rag they will get black in the low spots in no time.

    Backgrounds are cut away, and usually stippled, beaded, or lined. Properly done, darkening is not usually necessary.

    That one was done by fine grained stippling and lining.

    I have a gun done in "ink and bake" background and it sure looks like there is a black stain around the scrolls.
