First of all, I'm a Remington man when it comes to bolt action rifles. I'm also one that likes to shoot and help a friend out so when a buddy needed a little money and I asked him if he had any guns, he told me about this Howa 7MM-08. I looked up the value on it and loaned him $250 on it.

It's a model 1500 with a 20" barrel (youth model?) and the standard Nikko Sterling 3-10x42 scope. It's blue with what appears to be an original stock. In addition it came with a Harris Bipod and a nice hard case.

It's been a year and he hasn't shown any interest in paying me back so I'm assuming that it's mine now and headed out to the range for some fun time.

I'd like to hear what "The Experts" have to say about this weapon....

    Anyone ever heard of Howa? Any experience with their long guns? How should they be priced compared to more well known makers?

    You stoled it for $250, with all the included goodies. Make sure he didn't, get a bill of sale from him. I can't see anybody just walking away from a rifle in that condition, unless he obtained it by 5 finger discount.

    The Howa made weapons that I've handled seem to be quality pieces of work.

    I'm not a cheap-ass but the only reason I only gave him $250 on it so it was easier for him to pay me back.

    The stock is easily and cheaply replaceable with a full sized stock. I have exactly the same rifle branded Wby Vanguard with full sized stock that they sold as a carbine. It shoots quite well but has a significant "bark". I'll for sure give you your money back for this item plus 6% interest for the last year.

    For years, Howa made the same barreled actions for Weatherby as the Vanguard, and for Smith and Wesson, and Mossberg as the Model 1500.

    They are quality made for the $$, and most are MOA shooters, when set up right in the stock, with good glass. The rifle itself is worth $350.00-400.00. The scope is of unknown quality...if it works, great, but I would not depend on it for a costly guided hunt, that is a once in a life time deal. The bi-pod, and case are just an extra little bonus for the deal. You done well, but make sure it is yours, and request a reciept for it.

    The chambering of 7mm-08 Remington, is no slouch, either, and is capable of all North American game, except for the ones that can eat you.

    Howa seem to be priced lower-than-"standard" American brands of similar style and quality when advertised*, but they have always seemed to be well-made guns. I think your "pawn" deal with the other guy certainly worked out in your favor!

    * example: CDNN has them always well under the price for new Rugers, as do a couple of my local retailers on Rugers, Remingtons and Brownings, etc.

    I own couple Howa centerfire rifles!
    Mine has real good grade of wood stocks and High gloss finiah.
    Noticed sometime back a recall notice on the bolts and I shipped my bolts to a place down south for the recall notice. When I contacted them they sent me a shipping box so as prepaid. Something about the safety issues of slam firing. (firing when on safe, etc)
    I had to do quite a bit of poishing and fiddling with the trigger assembly pull on mine to get them smooth. Did not break smooth, was scratchy before break. Real good shooters and my rifles have a heavy feel with the wood stocks as compared to a Rem 700 weight feel. I've never weighed them but would guess they may be about 1 1/2 to 2 lbs heavier than a Rem 700.
    Real good shooters after I glass bedded and floated the barrels.
    I think Howa machining made several of the Weatherby's rifles at one time.

    You havee the "combo pack" that came with the 2 stocks and Sterling scope,,bipod extra add on-adds 50. 250 loan is good,,if he don't want it back you have made money, if he does you have kept a friend,,

    I have 2 Howa-made Vanguards, one .300 Whby and one 338 WinMag. Both came with the black composite stocks so I changed them out for Bell & Carlsons with the aluminum bedding chassis, also changed the triggers to Timneys. Both are excellent shooters and will stay inside MOA if I do my job. I have a Nikko-Sterling "Nighteater" on another rifle and it gives good service. The 7mm-'08 is a good round. Considering $50 for the scope and $50 for the Harris you got a good rifle for $150 with the capability of tricking it out for another 3-400 to an excellent field gun.
