Remlin guns
When did remington take over marlin? Heard marlin guns are junk since takeover. If a marlin gun has JM stamped on barrel, I'm assuming it's a real marlin. Is that correct? Thanks

I read write ups in end of 2007 so figure 2008/2009 before Remington started to make their runs after the old stock ran out. 0 -
Remington announced it Dec 26 2007 and yes if it has JM it is pre Remington 0 -

Not necessarily. Marlin has at times, been on or off the financial thread that holds it. I've seen junk come out of them followed by good stuff during a resurgence. The bolt action model XL7 series is actually a pretty decent deal. That came about after the Remington purchase. I used to own a model 882 in .22 WMR and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. The best accuracy it ever produced was 1.5" @ 100 yds.
In general, my opinion only, is that they have produced some improvements over some styles of weapons that already existed and some niche cartridges. But, nothing really ground breaking enough to worry about what was before or after the purchase of them. They have always catered to the low end firearms market. And in that, they have survived.0 -
The marlin 336 lever gun is the one that seems to get the most complaints since the remington takeover. Any other opinions on this? 0 -
Of the few 336 models that I have seen,about two dozen, it seems that the quality has dropped off since the Remington acquisition. I have never fired one of the new Remlins and can not comment on any mechanical function. But, fit and finish are poor and the grade of wood used has definitley fallen off from the older Marlins. I have seen a couple, shortly after the takeover, that I thought they might indeed have a hard time selling. They were a poor representation of what a 336 should be. I believe one is better off locating and older JM stamped 336 in nice condition than one of the new Remlins. Just my two cents. 0 -
"Freedom Group" has bought up a LOT of firearms related companies over the past decade or so, including Remington, Marlin, Bushmaster, H&R 1871, Dakota, Para USA and even Barnes bullets.
IMHO, anytime you have a large corporate entity taking over a business like Marlin that makes a product that requires quality design, precision manufacturing, end-user product safety and reliability, even customer service for repairs, etc... these pillars of any good gunmaker (or ammomaker) are sacrificed for shareholder profits almost every time. (Remember AMF / Harley-Davidson anyone?? [xx(])0 -
If it is a truly made Remlin then the serial # will start with "MR" (or Marlin made by Remington). If it is an earlier made Marlin then the serial # will start with 91-, 92-, or 93- and the barrels on it will still say that they are made in North Haven, Conn.
However in the transitional period there were different numbers of barrels and receivers left over. So if there was a gun that was sent back to the factory with warranty issues there could be mismatches depending on what was needed. For example I have a 336MXLR in 308ME that has a Remlin receiver with a Marlin barrel. It was messed up when purchased new and needed a new barrel. It was sent back to the factory and a few original Marlin barrels were left and one was installed on my rifle.
