Russian Nagant
Is there a tried & true way of correcting the long hard trigger pull on these rifles?

Lightly smooth the surfaces on the bolt and sear to make sure they are vertical, with a diamond file. Sometimes you can insert a small shim made from a pop can or similar thickness metal under the trigger to reduce how high the sear protrudes- you'll see where it screws in when out of the gun- to reduce travel (make sure you still have enough pressure to hold the trigger cocked). Otherwise, not much. That helps, but it's no miracle cure. 0 -
Most of my Mosins came through with a very acceptable trigger pull, but on a couple, I had to work the engagement a little. I went for a very slight positive engagement (as opposed to a neutral or negative engagement), wherein the striker spring is very slightly compressed during the trigger pull. The smoothness of the pull is controlled by the finish on the mating surfaces. You do not want a negative engagement, because constant striker spring pressure can cause the mating surfaces to creep out of engagement. 0 -

Its not exactly traditional, but Timney makes a trigger module for the Mosin Nagant rifle that will give you a crisp break at any weight you like from 1.5 - 4 lbs, and it adds a trigger blocking safety feature too.
Just a thought.0 -
The Finns modified the trigger on the M39 by adding a pin. Your options are to try the shims, replace it with a Finn trigger, replace it with an overpriced aftermarket trigger, or pin the trigger you have.

A great thought Shooter! I ordered a Nagant Timney Trigger from Midway. Picked it up & installed same day. It works perfectly & gives ease of mind with the new safety. Thanks again for your thought!0
