ranging help
Just got an ncstar 2-6x28 scope that has moa marks on the crosshairs. The ranging directions are, height of target divided by moa times 100 equals distance in yards. The target was 5 inches tall. Moa was 5 hash marks (25 actual moa). Distance I got was 20 yards. Incorrect. When measured, the distance was actually 14 yards.... what am I doing wrong. And no, not getting a better scope, it's for a 22

Keep doing what you are doing, measure it yourself.

First off, with glass in that category, I seriously doubt that you have a first focal plane reticle. Therefore, the graduations you have in that scope, are calibrated at a certain power...and I am betting it is around 4x power. I will give you a for instance of my own experience. I have several Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 Mil-Dot reticle scopes. They all have a hash mark on the power dial at 12 power, that says "mil=dot". That is the power that the reticle is supposed to be calibrated. You also might check your target size, that you are checking it against.
Most riflescopes are not available with a FFP reticle, untill you start hitting at least the $1k mark, and some, not until $2k or more. With optics, you truly do get what you pay for, and many a 22LR rifle, are way more capable than that ncSTAR you have. I have a very disgrumbled feeling, when someone says..."its only a 22". There are a lot of 22's out there, that are way more capable, within their limitations, than a lot of big game caliber rifles.

In your other post about this, I C&P ed the instructions from Ncstar for your scope. You must use the highest power setting to use the range finding feature. I doubt you would get a good reading at 14 to 20 yards. 0
