US Army 38 revolver
Hi,
During the late 80's and early 90's the US Army issued 38 revolvers to helicopter pilots. I believe one was made by Smith and Wesson and the other made by Colt. Can someone tell me what were the model pistols issued then? What accessories were issued with the revolver?

The only revolver that I could find from that late time frame, was the Ruger Security Six. This photo off the net shows one with U.S. government marking. I always thought they were issued to security guards rather then Army pilots though. I believe I read someplace that the folks who required a handgun smaller then the Beretta 9mm, were issued one of the smaller SIG 9mm's.
EDIT #1, The SIG pistol utilized by the U.S. military is the Model P228. It's known and marked as the " U.S. M11". Procurement started in the early 90's.

I knew a Navy pilot from the korea action that refused to carry the issue S&W in 38 S&W. He had a nazi marked P-38 with several extra mags. At the hearing the admiral said 'If a man going into combat wants to furnish his own gear; so be it'. That same admiral ruling that 1 in 5 tracer was the policy for the loaders to follow, however should a pilot choose to load his plane's ammo as 100% effective himself, he was free to do so. My time dates a bit before you're asking about, but...
I can't speak for the other brands, but I'm aware they were issued two different models of S&W .38 Spl. revolvers, the Model 10 (both round and square butt) and Model 15.
Both were equipped with a 4in. barrel and issued out of the armory with a basic load of 18 rounds FMJ ammunition.
These guns were basically the same, except for the M15 having a slightly heavier barrel and adjustable sights.
The Army also had 2in. M15's in their inventory and at times these might've been seen carried by pilots, but they were intended for issue to CID personnel.
Other than a holster, to my knowledge no sort of accessories were issued. I saw them carried in both belt and shoulder styles, but this appeared to be dependent upon either unit directives or personal choice.
Generally speaking, any sort of cleaning gear was simply handed out at the armory and returned rather than actually being issue items.0 -
The one's we had on the ship (Mid to late 80's) were the Ruger Six series. 0
