i have installed several. what they do is add weight. the reducer being filled with mercury works off the inertia concept.

They have a partial fill of mercury. The theory seems to be that the "slosh" of the mercury in the tube somehow cushions or spreads out the recoil impulse. I cannot tell that they do anything but add several ounces of weight.

Those sound lke they're for shotguns. I have several Harrt's Recoil Reducers for pistols. For the 6" 1911 recoil guide has the funkiest and very noticable feel. Basically it feels like I get two recoils instead of one smooth recoil.

I guess with the ball barrings, mercury and the veriable recoil spring it's something to get used to. At least for the 6" recoil reducers.

Now with shorter guide rods not much of a difference. K-40, Commander and a few others.

It functions like a dead-blow hammer, the filling sloshes a little and spreads the recoil impulse over a wider time so it seems less. I have one - a "Brake0" model from Brownell's - in my .300 Whby's Bell & Carlson stock. I put it in the butt and it balances the Harris bipod on the front swivel perfectly. The recoil is smoother and seems less difficult to manage.

They never made much sense to me, so when the satock on my M70 338 was broken and I repaired it (the grip was broken) I added the feature of routing out the forend and adding 12 oz of lead. Softens the recoil and really helps hold the barrel down when shooting.

Installed two in a double rifle, 500 NE. It really helped reduce felt recoil. Changed the balance point, and the rifle felt lighter afterwards.

I put a recoil tube in my 45-70 Siamese Mauser, it makes a world of difference.

Shoot over 30,000 shotguns shells a year and it would.
