sawed off shotgun barrel
I recently purchased an 18 1/2" barrel for a Mossberg 500 .410 Ga. Who ever sawed off barrel drilled and inserted a screw and sawed it down for front sight. closer inspection reveals that they drilled all the way through the barrel. Is this gun safe to shoot ?

I wouldn't be at all afraid to shoot it but since the choke sounds like it's gone the accuracy and the pattern may suffer more or less. Probably more.(IMO) 0 -
if The screw is flush with the barrel on the inside...it is safe. accuracy>NO 0 -
all bead sights on non ribbed barrels or plain barrels are drilled ,threaded and a bead screwed down and the stub in the barrel is flushed 0 -
You might find that it really needs a ramp to raise the bead up enough to actually aim with. +1 for flush on the inside. 0 -

Plain barrels commonly had the bead hole drilled completely through the wall, and the shank was dressed flush on the inside - usually. I've seen a few factory bead installations in which the shanks were not dressed off, and I call them 'wad rippers'.
When I make a bead for a shortened shotgun barrel, I use a piece of oversized brass rod and reduce part of the diameter for threading for the hole. When installed and tightened, the oversized part can be dressed off square and then worked for closer regulation if desired.0 -
Actually bought it on GunBroker. I don't think accuracy will be a problem. If I ever have to call on it, it will be so close I won't miss. The end of the screw doesn't go into the path of a projectile leaving the barrel. Slight recess. I may have to tie the gun down and run my string for first shot of low brass, then work up. Have original barrel, but don't want to damage the receiver or me. 0 -

Yes. A hole near the END of a barrel is safe so long as you don't have any part of the front bead/sight actually sticking into the actual barrel space where it could get impacted by a projectile or wad.
Holes in the FAR part of the barrel are safe, because by the time the projectiles get that far out, operating pressures are pretty low.
As one example, people punch holes near the end of their barrels ON PURPOSE all the time to reduce recoil or flip. Its called "porting".
