Risky purchase? Century Arms Chinese Type 56 SKS S
I found a company with a few of these Century Arms Chinese Type 56 SKS Semi Auto Rifle 7.62x39.
They were surplus used but makes me nervous since I dont know thta much about gun repair. Listing states:
We don't know where these came from, or how they got here, but Century found a batch of Chinese Type 56 SKS rifles and they've just hit the market at a great price.
These will come covered in cosmoline and in good, but used condition. Most of the stocks are beat up with dings and scratches. The bores are nice and although the rifles look a little rough, they should function nicely. Metal is in good condition with some finish wear. These include the blade bayonet, machined triggerguards, chrome lined bore, ten round magazine and 20" non-threaded barrel.

All Chicom SKS's (with the exception of those brought back from Vietnam) were brand new, not milsurp. In other words, they were made for sale to the US market.
"Used" could mean a lot of things; sounds like they don't really want to say. My suspicion is that they bought rifles returned as defective & are now trying to dump them. So, if you aren't good at repairing these, & don't have a supply of parts......

Buy two if they're cheap enough build the one that's better and canibalize the other for parts. 0 -
Many of these SKS's were given to the Chinese militia forces after the PLA went to AK's and such. These might be a lot of the old Chinese militia rifles........who knows? Or they could have been used by forces in Africa as the Chinese "loaned" them out by the thousands to "liberation" forces in the Third World. So, they could be from anywhere. Gosh knows the rifle can take a beatin' and keep on tickin'. But if I didn't know much about gun repair why buy one of these when almost new ChiCom SKS's and Yugo's are on the market at good prices. You don't talk about cost other than "great price" but if me I would go for a newer model at perhaps a little higher price but in much better condition...whatever rows your boat! Good luck[:)] 0 -
These are rifles that came from Kosovo conflict, they were used hard, but serviceable. Many have "trench art" carved in the stocks. Parts aren't hard to find, and they're easy to work on. 0 -

Buy a real Russian 1950's era one and don't look back. Milled receivers and nicer wood. They do cost more but are reliable and made well. 0 -

Yooper John's SKS website has a nice series of photos of SKS' that were made at the Jianshe Arsenal (Factory 26) from 1956 to 1980. The 1970 gun has clear import marks of Interstate Arms.

something like that....the easy way to look is just do a search on the auction side for SKS and scroll through the auction. In most cases in the title the sellers state if the SKS is Russian , Yugoslavian, Norinco etc. You will pay more for the Russian and Euro guns but I have just found them to be made a little better.0
