How can you tell a nickle finish from an ultimate stainless finish? The bluebook lists both and I don't know which one I have. Also how can you tell the year it was made by the serial no.? Does the serial no. give any other info about the gun?

What value would you put on a mid 60's 8" Colt Python with the original box and all paperwork? The pistol has less than 30 rounds through it. It is in excellent condition. Thanks 0 -

First, do a search on all forums for the words "remove rust" (press the word SEARCH at the top of the page). Then, do what is needed to remove the rust; value depends upon the damage seen after rust is removed.
Next, take photos with your digital camera & post them here; instructions can be found on a "sticky" near the beginning of the forum.

Use a copper penny and some hoppe's no 9 to remove the rust. Coat the rusted spot with the hoppe's and then gently rub with the edge of the penny...clean with hoppe's rub more until gone. Will depend on how rusted it is as to how much will come off. 0 -
You can also use 0000 steel wool dipped in gun oil.. the 0000 steel wool will not take off the bluing..... 0 -
I disagree steel wool WILL scratch the blued barrel. Kroil and BRASS "CHORE BOY " put scrubber will not. 0 -
Hard to establish value without seeing the Python in question. Condition is everything....but having said that Python values have gone nuts over the last couple of years. I would think (WAG) value is something in the $1k area, up or down depending on that "light rust" condition and the quality of the repair. 0 -
Seems to have been a little mis-communication. Someone I met is selling this pistol. I was offered this pistol, I only saw it once,and did NOT have a digital camera on me, so taking pics was not possible. I am not looking for an exact price. Just a ballpark price to get me going on possibly buying it. Thanks 0 -
In my estimation a little rust, non-factory grips and 4" barrel takes this down to the $750-$800 range. It sounds like its' been a shooter and will never be a collectible. If its been shot alot (especially with magnum loads, be sure to check the cylinder timing on all chambers. Replacing factory grips, $50-$100 bucks. New hand and re-timing ???, but also not inexpensive. 0 -
