I found an sks carbine rifle, chinese, with no bayonet lug or cut in the stock for one. The only # on the gun was on the bolt. Can anyone tell me anything about this rifle? Were any made for civilian market?

  With the exception of a small number of rifles brought back from Vietnam by our troops as "war trophies", ALL Chicom SKS rifles imported into the US were made specifically for the civilian market. All rifles legally imported will have a serial number on the receiver & importer markings.
  
  Since yours has no serial number on the receiver & no importer marking, it may well be a "war trophy". How do you know it is Chinese if there are no markings? We really need to see photos.

  I'm not so sure that all imported SKS rifles were commercially made. I have an SKS made at arsenal 406, which has a number (484) painted in red on the stock, and five Chinese characters below it which are painted in yellow. This is very strange for a gun that was actually made as an export item. The gun also has a commercial Norinco export marking, and the importer's mark of 'PTK Intl Atl GA'. These markings appear to have been added, as the markings are through the finish, whereas the other markings are blued.
