7.62x51
Have a whole pile (700-800 rounds) of Venezuelan 7.62x51 (green box headstamp CAVIM) that won't cycle my M-1A. I suspect it was for FAL's (not sure) But I'm not sure if I should go out and buy me a bolt gun to shoot it up with. Been wanting a Sav 110 in .308 anyway.
Question is Buy the bolt gun, or have it pulled apart and reloaded to US milspecs?

Just traded for some 7.62 military ammo. Head stamp reads 7.62x51 and L O F N 1970. Just exactly what do I have here? Thanks 0 -

This would be safe to shoot in any frearm that is deemed safe, and is designed for, and chambered for the 308 Winchester, or 7.62x51 NATO.

Don't have a reference but I'm guessing the FN is "Fabrique Nationale" and what you have is Belgian made military 7.62x51 (.308) ammo. Edit. . .OK, maybe not. It was just a guess.
On .308 in an 1891 Argentine, many of those guns have been converted to 7,62x51.
More knowledgable people than myself have claimed that the metal in those older small ring Mausers isn't really tough enough for high-pressure .308 rounds. Lacking the extra third bolt lug and gas flange of the newer Mausers, there are also some safety concerns about what would happen if you had a pierced primer or burst shell.
I think these are probably OK if you used reduced loads, though.
Edit: Nigerian does make more sense than Belgian.
In any case, these rounds should be safe for a .308 Winchester Remington bolt action or 7.62x51 Browning BAR.
Apparently the Nigerian plant was set up by the British using German machinery, and the ammo itself is better than you might think it "ought" to be given where its made.0 -
Fabrique National (Belgian made) M80. Unless it had colored tips. If it has colored tips, it's one of the variances of M80.

Dumb question: what are the bullet measurements? Are they that of a 7.62x51? Can you provide a picture?0 -

If was F.N. Belgium, that would'a popped up lickety-split, my opinion only.

Yes, it will work great as blasting ammo for basic target work, however it should not be used for any form of hunting or serious target work0 -
