Springfield 1873 Trapdoor
Could someone help me out on approximate value? It has a serial number of 16550. Rifle is in really good condition. I researched values and they are all over the place. Was hoping you guys could help me narrow down the price range. Thanks, Brett

Hi - If you pull back the hammer and lift the block, I think you'll find one more number. I believe your serial number is 165502, not 16550, and was manufactured in 1882. That tracks with the improvements of 1879, e.g., serrated trigger, later cleaning rod and low arch breech block. If that's not a number I see and the serial number is in fact 16550, it was upgraded after 1879 by the Springfield Armory.
It should have an inspector's cartouche on the left side of the stock opposite the lock such as "SWP 1882" in script. However, it appears that your stock has been sanded and restained as the color is much too light for an original finish. It also looks like the right side of your stock has some type of damage near the nosecap but it's hard to tell in the pic.
Still, aside from some light surface rust which should clean off, it looks like it's in decent shape and should bring around the $600-$700 range.0 -
Well how about that, I pulled the hammer back and it is serial number 165502! And unfortunately no inspector's cartouche. That you for the help and valuation... much appreciated. 0 -
