Got the AR, now what
Ok wasnt planning on buying but when to Gander today and brought my 30-30 just in case. THey had a DPMS 308 for 1199 on sale 200 bucks off. Ended up trading in the 30-30 for a few hundred bucks and got the thing for 800 after scoruing the internet I do not think you could do much better.
Came with 2-10rd mags. Hard case, and a cheapo sling.
My question is, like the AR15 lower, with this lower can I attach a 338 lapua or anything else to it.

Don't know for sure but most of the specialty uppers fit the AR15 lowers. 0 -
from what I gather the AR lower will not work on a 3.08 so that would lead me to beleive they wouldnt work for the others 0 -
majority of the bolt action coversion that use a AR lower take the AR15 not the AR10 0 -
The 7.62X51mm that you seem to have is the DPMS version of the AR-10 and will not take parts or exchange uppers with an AR-15 family. You can find various uppers that take rounds based on the .308, i.e. .243, 7mm/08, 260 Rem, but you won't be able to use the 5.56, 6.8,.30AR etc. You do have a very capable rifle that will be able to deliver more power more accurately than your old thuty-thuty. There is a whole world of goodies you can add on to this chassis; scopes, lights, lasers, stocks and tac-gear 'til you can't lift it without help. I would stay away from magazines of greater than 20 round capacity, they get REAL heavy and the springs can be iffy. Try it out then decide what you want to do with it. 0 -
I just finished building my LR-308. Thier are two sizes of lowers. You have the smaller lower i.e., .223, .243,6.8 ect, then you have the large sized lower, i.e., .308, .338, 300 whisper ect. alot of ar-15 lower parts will work with the LR-308 lower. i.e trigger group.mag release, stock and buffer tube. But the buffer and spring will be different as will the takedown pins, also a badlever will not cross over. They are both very versitile, accurate platforms. Also you have two different brands of rifle. You have the more popular DPMS style and then you have the Colt/armalite style most of the parts are not interchangable between the two even though they may be the same caliber. I don't know the differences because I went with the DPMS style due to the fact that this platform has more parts to work with both DPMS and after market. For some reason the information seems to be getting cross-mingled tonight.
What you bought is based off of the larger of the two main platforms you see out there in AR's, the AR-10. However, there are some different AR-10's out there and since Armalite has the rights to it, some have made theirs different. And, they are named differently as well.
The smaller size is the AR-15 which handles a myriad of cartridges from .300 Whisper/.300 AAC Blackout on up to the BR and WSSM cases. Reduced platforms for it even handle the .22 LR. But, that's not the platform you have.
To answer your last question, no, you cannot put a .338 Lapua 'stock' (as is) onto that rifle. There may be an upper somewhere lurking in someones machine shop that will allow you to do this as a bolt action.
You can put any upper based on either the .308 case (.243, .260) or a shortened version (Creedmoor cases, various hi-power hybrids) or even a short bullet in a longer case such as the 6mm Crusader (basically an improved Mauser case, but with bullets stuffed deep) In short, any case with an OAL of 2.800", or 2.95" with some magazines, will work.

I'll try to simplify it as best I can explain it. The -15 platform (AR-15) is for the smaller cartridges. The -10 platform is for the larger .308 based or similar cartridges.
The .300 Whisper is a .221 Rem Fireball (itty-bitty)[;)] necked up to take .30 cal.
If you are asking about a .338 Fed?, yes you can put that cartridge in a -10 platform. A .338 Lapua case is almost as long as the amount you can fit into a -10 platform. It's huge compared to that action. It's even bigger than most normal long bolt actions.0 -

yeah I was getting confused as well, and still kind of I am. So I guess what I have is straight is I have basically a AR10 or lR308 upper and lower. SO I can not put a 338 upper on this lower, but i can put a 243, which I would think you could then put a 6.5 or 6.8 or even a 5.56 Am I wrong?
Most of that knowledge is for future if I wanted to add a capability. But really for now all I want to do is change the hand guard out which on the DPMS is a little tougher, and I like the length of the stock, but would like to change it, it an A2 stock and would like something with some more weight savings, as the rifle is kind of heavy.0 -

You can put a .338 Federal upper on this but I don't know who would make one to fit a DPMS. The .338 Federal is a factory option from Armalite which will not work on your lower. Mine is pictured below.
