.22 upper on AR-15 lower
Just wanted to get a few opinions on an something the I've been mulling over. I've sold a few things from my safe, and now have enough cash to purchase whatever I want.
The gun is going to be a shooter, and when its not shooting 5.56, I'm going to drop something like a CMMG .22lr upper onto it.
My question is, is there anything I need to be aware of when pairing up a .22 upper with the lower of a Colt Sporter (which is what I've got my eyes on). I thought I read somewhere about takedown pin sizes varying considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer....and I'd hate to sink that much money into something that doesn't match up properly.

Just buy the CMMG .22LR bolt & mags & you will be good to go. No need to buy the whole upper. 0 -
i know the colt carbine 6920 has regular pins back and front the older commercial AR15 had large front pins i would go to some shows or shop and see some of the new colts to confirm..all the 22 uppers are built on milspec push pin holes..cmmg makes good units both drop in and dedicated...buy the stainless units as they are slick i have them both ways don't forget the blackdog 50rd drum too 0 -
I have the CMMG upper and use it on a an AR lower. Just a few odds & ends about what I liked and didn't like.
The bolt gets dirty as hell. I didn't buy the chromed bolt but now wish I had. It's a bit slicker and functions with a touch more authority than the parkerized type.
I removed the plastic "brass deflector" because it did nothing for me and I didn't like the looks. I shoot lefty and get no gas or powder into my face, I don't think it's needed. I also replaced the "half cut" ejection port cover with a full sized one.
Being a 22 lr the upper comes with no gas tube. To my eye it was apparent "something's missing" when looking at the intersection of upper receiver and forend grips - that little piece of gas tube going into the receiver from the gas block. I used a slightly shortened gas tube from the block to just inside the receiver for looks.
I replaced the plastic insert "bolt forward assist" with a real steel one.
I bought a CMMG specific bolt hold open device and mag followers to hold the bolt back after the last shot.
I tend to use high velocity ammo, it seems to function better. I haven't used the "bolt only" set up but have read that it's not as accurate as the complete upper. Using the bolt insert requires a long jump through freebore until the bullet hits rifling and the rate of twist in a 5.56 barrel is much faster than the rimfire's 1 -16" rate.0 -

These are very good.
As for the front pin on your Sporter II, they do make special conversion pins for the large front pin Colt's. There are most likely several for sale on the auction side, and from Midway, or Brownells.
