Best ammo for M77 Tang in 243 & 270?

I have a 243 mfg in 1971 which believe to be a "flat bolt" and a 270 round bolt mfg in 1972. Ruger customer service says they can only recomend for what they are selling today, which is Federal Powershock.

What has been your experience with the older M77's?

    Like any rifle, you need to try several brands, and types of ammunition tosee what it likes best. Two consecutive serial numbered rifles, of the same chambering, may have totally different preferrences for their diet.

    For standard no frills, there is the Federal Fusion, or PowerShock, Remington Core-Lokt, or the Winchester PowerPoint. The ammunition lines go up from there in price and creativity.

    The rifle may change but the answer will not.

    Each rifle is an event onto itself.

    You may find the cheapest bulk ammo shoots best or it might take the uber-expensive top of the line premium ammo to keep groups acceptable. Until you shoot some of each you will never know.

    If you handload the process is a lot easier.

    I have a red-pad M-77RSI in .243 that loves Wal-Mart Federal 100 Gr Hi-Shoks, and Remington 100gr Core-lokts. It doesn't like Win 100 gr power points, Hornady, or PMC stuff.

    I have a Mauser .270 that adores plain old Wal-Mart 130 gr Core Lokts, but refuses to shoot decent groups with "good ammo" like Federal Partition or Hornady all-copper stuff.

    Your experiences might be 100% different than mine. If you're not a handloader, I suggest you buy a box of several brands/bullet styles and see what your two like best... and stick with the ones they do. If you do load, search out other's accurate (and safe) loads in loading manuals and have at it! It can get pricy trying a bunch of different stuff, but finding that magic load makes all the trouble worth it.

    I have a tang safety M77 in .25-06 and it shoots just fine with Remington Core Lokts and Hornady Superformance. But you could have two identical brand guns and both may or may not shoot the same brand equally.

    Bottom line, in my experience even the earliest of 77's will safely handle any factory ammunition out there. What your rifle prefers, only it can tell you.[:D]

    Any factory ammo will work fine in either.
    In my ruger 270 m77 tang safety I hand load 130 grain Sierra SPBTs with a CCI large rifle primer and 17.2 grains of IMR 4350 powder. Pushing the bullet at around 3000 fps.

    I have 2 ruger m7 internationals with tang safety but have not worked up a load for them being they are my 2 gand daughter's first deer rifles. I have been shooting PMP factory ammo through them with excellent results.

    Exactly why I think posting load data on a forum that is not a reloading site is dangerous!!
    Just suppose he is a new reloader and he read only that last post and went to his bench and threw about 20 of that load.[xx(][xx(][xx(]
