Mossberg Trophy Hunter 500 Slug Gun

Anybody out there own & shoot one of these? Dicks has them on sale for about $ 350 and they look pretty tempting. With the rifled barrel and the lightning trigger (Savage accutrigger knock off), surely they'll shoot pretty good - but can anybody tell me how good? Can't seem to find a review on one anywhere.

  Well, they are a decent shotgun, at a good price, for sure, but it all depends on what you want to feed it, and the thickness of your wallet to feed it. Shooting the amunition it likes should keep you in the game, at least out to 100 yards, and possibly to 150. Having a rifled bore and nice trigger, does not gaurantee anything, even though it might aid accuracy.
  
  Being a rifled bore, it will like sabot slugs, which are around $15.00 per box of 5 rounds on average. This gun will NOT care for the lead Foster-type slugs, which are less expensive. It might shoot the first few ok, or even great, but it will be a downhill slide from there. The grooves in the rifling will fill up with lead, the bore will be heavily fouled, and extremely hard to clean.
  
  The usual route one takes after purchasing these, are buying about $50.00 worth of sabot type sluges, or about 15 rounds, is what that equates to. Go sight it in, and get sick of blowing $3.00-5.00 per round out the door, and say to themselves...I'm going to try the regular slugs. Big mistake, as within 5 shots, the gun will not group regular slugs, or sabots, because the bore is so fouled.
  
  Personally, unless it is essential for you to reach way beyond 100 yards, I would opt for the smooth bore, and foster slugs. Most well sighted smooth bore slug guns, will print foster-type slugs, well within 5 inches(some a lot better), and that is plenty good for deer, out to 100 yards.
