Winchester 1897 DOM and issues

I'd like to know the DOM for a Winchester 1897 with a serial number of 324883. This shotgun isn't mine, I'm asking for an acquaintance. Also, from what I'm told, it will fire a round as it's chambered. Possible worn sear or poor trigger job?

  The design of the 1897 will allow them to "slam-fire" if the trigger is held back while the action is cycled. My 97's will do this (not reccommended!). Don't know if that's the issue with your friend's gun but FYI.

  Bert should be along for d.o.m., as to the firing when being closed (not pulling trigger), a loose sear spring screw will cause this also. (the small screw you can see when looking down at the bottom of the action)

  I'm aware if the "slam-fire" feature, not sure if he is. From what he said, it sounds like it fires without any user manipulation. He inherited the shotgun and hasn't actually witnessed this, his mother told him that his father said it does this. I know 4th hand info is sketchy at best, but I'm trying to give him some pointers before he throws money away taking it to our worthless local gunsmith. He is mechanically apt, so if it's something he can fix himself, that'd be even better.

  May 1906, and if the trigger is held while the action is cycled, it will "slam-fire". If it fires after the action is cycled without touching the trigger, then you have as sear problem.

  cheapest and easiest starting point, blast it out with any standard gun cleaner/scrubber in spray can. then go from there you won't be out more than $5 for the cleaner.
