Marlin Model 989
I have an old Marlin Model 989.
What bothers me about it is I can not find a Serial # on it.
I have run into other older Marlins that did not have a serial #.
This came out of my late father-in-laws shop.
Can this be sold and shipped or not. Do not want to break any laws.
Or do I just break it down and sell it as a parts kit and destroy the receiver?

Prior to 1968, there was no legal requirement for long guns to have a serial numbers. This changed when the gun control act of 1968, became law.
Many older long guns don't have serial numbers. You should have no legal problems selling your Marlin, as long as it was originally manufactured without a serial number.0 -
Rifle's made before the Gun Control Act of 1968 didn't need serial numbers. You will find most of them made do not have one.
Dealers just put "NSN" where the nimber goes in their books.
It is legal to sell and ship.0 -
That sets my mind at ease. I just dug out an old Stevens single shot
break top shotgun that has no serial number on it.
It is the same one my late father had and it has no number on it. He purchased his in like the early 40's. The both have the plastic stock
and forearm.
