Shipping to a FFL holder
To ship a hand gun to FFL holder, do you have to ship it overnight, next day which is expensive or can it be shipped cheaper with a longer delivery date?

Unless you are an FFL yourself, a handgun can only be shipped via UPS and FedEx. You have to use whatever method they want. Right now, I think that is next day. But, ask them. 0 -
You might want to explore the option of shipping through a FFL dealer. If you ship through a dealer there is record of where the gun was last and what FFL dealer it went to.
This might not seem like a big deal but if the gun is lost or stolen in transit, it might be easier to settle an insurance claim. If you ship the gun yourself and it is lost or stolen you are on your own.

Non licensees cannot mail handguns, even if they are going to an FFL holder. This leaves you with shipping by common carrier; typically UPS or FedEx, both of which have policies that mandate air shipping at substantial cost. To ship in violation of their policy is at your own peril. 0 -

From the USPS Domestic Mail Manual:
g. Antique firearm means any firearm (including those with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap, or similar type of ignition system) manufactured in or before 1898, or any replica thereof, if such replica:
(1) Is not designed or redesigned for using rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition.
(2) Uses rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition that is no longer manufactured in the United States and that is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade.

2.0 Antique Firearms
Antique firearms sent as curios or museum pieces may be accepted for mailing without regard to 1.3 through 1.6.
Just be sure that it DOES meet the definition of antique above, and it can be mailed by US Mail.0 -
Since most shipping regulations are based on Federal law, it's probably best to also be familiar with ATF&E definitions just in case they conflict.
But, bottom line is that shipping or mailing firearms is not really all that complicated. Even to CA.[;)]0
