Very Nice Winchester M-42 Counterfeit
Howdy Folks,
Last week a friend brought me a Winchester model 42 to sell for him. He bought it as a factory engraved gun about 20 years ago. He paid $9,500.00. I had the unpleasant task of telling him his M-42 was clearly a counterfeit. The gun (sn #59200) was made in 1947 and is gorgeous. It was engraved by Virgil Graham and is an obvious attempt to replicate the Winchester 42-5 engraving pattern. He now knows it's not worth anywhere close to what he paid for the gun but he would like to know what it is realistically worth. Any help would be appreciated.

$9500 in 1992 U.S.Dollars is about $3800 in 2012 USD .I bet it would bring twice that or more at auction. 0 -
There is also 1 listed on the auction side.
I spoted it quick, and Bert agreed with me. FAKE AFTER Market0 -
There are several flags with this gun but the two that jumped out at me are:
(1) Simmons started installing ribs for Winchester in 1957 but this gun was made in 1947.
(2) The engraving is signed by Virgil Graham. Winchester discouraged their engravers from singing their work unless specifically requested and Graham was never an engraver for Winchester.0 -
Hello Rick,
The gun is obviously not worth what he paid for it. That said, it is extremely difficult to predict what a potential buyer would be willing to pay for it today. The gun still has some value, but we will not know what that figure is until the gun & cash exchange hands. If it were me, I would start it at $1500 no reserve, and let the bidders decide what it is ultimately worth.0 -
That is the prettiest counterfit model 42 I have ever seen.... 0
