Question about a Trapdoor Springfield

Ive got a Springfield Trapdoor Rifle SN 282254 The bore is shiny, but the rifling at the muzzle has been "relieved" for about an inch from the muzzle. The rifling in the "relieved" area is still there but wont touch the bullet when fired. Im thinking that the rifling at the muzzle was bad and someone "bored" it out to get a better crown without cutting and crowning the barrel. Is this a gunsmith repair or did some rifles come this way originally? Thanks for your help.
PS Ive shot this rifle with Pyrodex reloads and it will group 20 shots on a dinner plate at 100yds. Its probably better than that but the sights are too fine (small) for my bad eyes.

    Sounds like a Bubba crown job to me. Perhaps it was the poor false muzzle for seating bullets down the bore to a case with the powder covered with a wad. For an unlimited class black powder iron chicken shoot I made a breach seater for my 45-350 RMag on a 600 R. 540 gr cast bullets on top a full case of 4Fg would throw down rams with a hole punched through the plate. Funny they never invited me back.

    I agree with Charlie. Never heard of any Trap Doors having their barrels counterbored. Usually this is found on East Bloc Mosin Nagants that were cleaned from the muzzle using a steel cleaning rod.

    The rifling's still there. That makes it sound like it might just be erosion. The muzzle and throat are the parts of the barrel which erode.

    I don't see unjacketed lead bullets just eroding the muzzle. If the trapdoor had been fired that much the rifling in the barrel would show substantial wear.

    Its definetly been machined. It looks alot like the muzzle of newer Thompson Center blackpowder rifles. They have an unrifled 3/4 of an inch at the muzzle so that a sabot starts down the bore easier.

    My Trapdoor has a pitted ring around the interior of the barrel about one and a half inch from the muzzle. If you got one that was really pitted up you might think about a courter bore.
