Winchester Question
Not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but anyway, I was going thru my fathers gun cabinet and came across a Winchester model 65, It said it was a 30 WCP of 30WCF caliber. Is this possible as I cannot find any in the Blue Book that say such a caliber. The gun is in 90-95% condition all original.

Bert H will be the MAN. but in the meantime The model 92 was designed for mostly Pistol length cartridges. The model 94 will Take much longer and more powerful Cartridges. 0 -

The 1886, 1892, and 1894, are all similar actions, just in different lengths. Very similar to the 1873, and 1876, being somewhat the same, just different sizes.
The 1886 being the largest, and most powerful, followed by th 1894, and the smallest being the 1892.
I do agree, that the 1892, is the most fun to shoot, but there is somethin alluring about that big 1886, chambered in my favorate 45-70 Govt. It might not be fast, but when it arrives, it is like a freight train.

You don't really need rocks and dynomite handloads for the 45-70, even though the 1886 will withstand some absolutely brutal loads. That old cartridge with a 405 grain hardcast, going along about 1400 FPS, works just fine.0 -
Someday I hope to get to make up a takedown 95 in 30-40 Ackley Improved. A 71 in 348 is interesting but the 95 in 405 was easier to carry. With good handloads in a 45-70 the weight of an 86 is a blessing.
added I have/had everything cast from 292 to 540 gr. My 5 1/4 pound 45-350 Rem Mag built on a Rem 600 would push the big bullets into almost 5 ft of undisturbed desert dirt. The 330 Gould Hollow Point is a nice bullet for the low end. My 45-70 is built on a mexican small ring about 6 pounds.0 -

The Model 1894 is not an "improvement" over the Model 1892. Instead, it was an entirely new/different design, specifically designed for a new class of cartridges.
The Model 1892 was designed as a vast improvement over the Model 1873. Both models were chambered for the same pistol length 44 WCF, 38 WCF, and 32 WCF cartridges.
Both the Model 1886 and 1892 use centrally located twin vertically sliding locking bars to secure the bolt in battery, whereas the Model 1894 uses s single rear mounted locking bar.0 -
After buying an 1892 clone, I agree that it is a great gun to shoot. I've never been a big fan of lever actions before that even though I do have a 94. Too bad they didn't make a 86/92 style lever action in a 30-30. 0 -
