What is the difference between Rem. 870 Wingmaster, and 870 Express?

  Lads and Gents,
  
  I received an out of the squad car (legally) rem 870 pump about 20 yrs ago. Has lots of extras but has a short buck shot barrel. Need an intermidiate barrel I can use for trap, and game----and self defense---Cans!!! Best lenght and choke is greatly needed in the Scramento area. This is a riot set up so would like to have an extra barrel to reach out a little so I can shoot clay birfd and jerks when the poop hits tha fan

  28" modified, or 30" full probably what your wanting. There probably the most common 870 barrels. Check on the auctions. As there the most common standard barrels sold on new 870's.

  Normal 28" barrel would work w/ chokes recommended by rufe-snow.
  
  I'm guessing you probably have an "old" slug barrel on that gun already.
  
  They were a short smooth bore with no vented rib. The had rifled sights & were sold as "turkey" and "deer" barrels because they had the rifled sights unstead of the bead.

  You have a good self defence tube now. Get a 26 to 32 inch tube with screw in chokes. I like shorter but that just me. I'd bet the local trap/skeet/sporting clays range or someone there would let you try theirs.

  I have an 870 express, with a 21" turkey barrel, with the RemChoke set up. I can change it from super full turkeys out to 65 yards, killing machine, to an IC choked Skeet and grouse gun, in less than a minute. They make those Remchoke barrels from 21, to 32 inches...pick the length you like.

  Barrel length has little/nothing to do with choking and useable range. A 26" choke tube barrel will fit your needs better than a 30" fixed choke barrel. The extra length(weight) on the front end will help your swing on clay birds but will hinder you greatly on closer encounters-your decision as to which is a priority.
  I have an 870 with a custom Winchoked(yes, Winchoked-made long before Remington started using screw in choke tubes) 22" barrel that will rival any length you choose for patterns at distance.

  Not sure what the question is, exactly.
  
  Full cylinder (ie no choke) 18.5" riot barrel is the optimal barrel for self-defense, in my opinion. Its also good for hunting large game with slugs.
  
  For trapshooting or wingshooting, you'll want a 26-32" choked barrel.
  
  Exact length and choke are matters of exactly what you're shooting at, and mostly personal preference, but you're going to have a hard time going wrong with a 28" bbl with modified choke. That's pretty much the de-facto standard barrel for airborne targets, with lots of people also liking a 30" bbl.
  
  Yes, a longer barrel gun can be used for defense, but the longer barrel makes the gun a lot less quick to point, and less maneuverable indoors. So its a compromise.
  
  You can buy a long choked 870 barrel on the auction site here for about $150, or even less, if you're patient and/or lucky. And I'm sure if you wanted to, you could probably swap your riot barrel even for a choked one.
  
  If you want a "compromise" barrel, I'd suggest that its a lot harder to hit a moving target outdoors with a short barrel than it is to hit an assailant indoors with a long barrel. Also, choke is entirely irrelevant at any kind of reasonable indoor "defense" distance.
