What's my 44 mag worth?
Greetings. I have a Smmith and Wesson model 29-3, serial number AHW85**. It has the typical cylinder ring wear. Barrel length
5 3/4". Hogue grips. I don't have the original grips, box or literature. I was wondering what it's worth?

It's not really possible to guess the value of a used gun without seeing photos.
The length of a revolver barrel is measured from the front face of the cylinder to the front face of the barrel.
You can hit the ADVANCED button on the GB homepage & do a search of COMPLETED auctions (highest number of bids first, show only NO RESERVE auctions) to see what guns that look like yours have been selling for.

The barrel should be measured from the very rear of the barrel - it protrudes into the frame just a bit, up to the cylinder face. Yours should measure as a 6" barrel.0 -

It has always been my opinion that the -2 was the high water point in N frame revolvers, especialy 29's. -3s are not pinned and recessed. I have several N frames, and try to purchase nothing later than -2 guns.
There may be several here who differ with me, but P&R with TT&TH is what realy makes an N frame special.

If you look at completed auctions, you will find several that have sold recently. Most were 500 to 600 dollars. I think 435 was the lowest on up to over a thousand. An Elmer Keith tribute gun went for under 1100. 0 -
Well--I have a 29-2 8 3/8ths dirty harry in the oiled walnut box with less than a 100 rounds throuth it----what's that worth? Can't tell from photos it's been off the showroom floor 0 -
I also have a Lincoln Town Car in my drive, and even though it's Silver, I wonder what it's worth.

Sorry 'bout that, I forgot to check back. I contacted S&W, here was their response:
Thank you for contacting Smith & Wesson. Your model 29 was made sometime from 1982 to 1988. Our computerized records began around 1988. If you provide the entire serial number, I can check to see if it is in the system. We have not made a 29 with a 5 _" barrel. There were 29's with 5" and 5 ?" barrels, but they are rare. Please remember that a revolver's barrel length is actually measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle. Thanks very much, and have a great day.

The full serial number is AHW8517. Below the serial number are the engravings B17, and 51328, and I included a picture of the measuring tape against the gun.
Their response:
That is curious. It doesn't look like it was cut down at the muzzle. It has not been here for work (at least not since 1989), and it is, in fact, not in the computerized records so I am not able to tell you the original barrel length. Possibly the barrel was "turned" (a process to fix a worn forcing cone), but I didn't think a discernible amount of material was removed for that. I have an inquiry in with the factory historian. I will let you know what he says.
And that was the last I heard from them.
