Need Advice Quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I;m really close to a purchase of a new Sig P556. I have through evry old mag and books I have but can't find anything good or bad about this "pistol." I owned an old Bushmaster .223 made by Gwinn Firearms, but had to sell it for an emergency. I hated shooting the BM. It seemed not much thought went into where to place your non firing hand, and that it got so hot that even the trigger would burn your finger!
The Sig P556 seems like a perfect replacement for my old Bushmaster. Is the P556 worth the price it commands, which is knocking on $1K? Please give me some help on this weapon before I make a purchase!!

    Not only the P556 but all the handgun versions of the various semiauto rifles, are useless, miserable clunkers. Unless you can set it up with a folding stock and get it papered as a SBR, your just pissing your money away, IMHO.

    EDIT #1, No offense to DFletcher, but the only folks that I imagined to have any regard for these "PISTOLS", are the self employed pharmaceutical salesmen and bikers. We had a guy show up at our range with one that was made by Keltec. He had it tricked out with a double drum magazine and red dot sight. It just gave me the willies just watching him blasting away. It was so heavy and cumbersome he couldn't hold it. He had it on a jury rigged bipod.

    As usual, I agree with Rufe 100% here.

    These small "pistolized" rifles *might* make sense if you could put a folding stock on them, and especially if you could do that AND get select fire. Then you've got a potentially useful submachine gun based on a common rifle platform, offering all sorts of advantages of common manual of arms, parts, accessory, and ammo availability.

    But other than that, I still haven't figured out the point of these things.

    As ordinary pistols, they're heavy and poorly balanced, making them uncomfortable to shoot one-handed, and bulky making them difficult to conceal. So right off the bat, you've already negated the two most important functions of a handgun.

    They're loud as heck, offer harsh recoil and bright flash, and to top it off, the short barrel significantly gimps the only saving feature of the guns. . .that they fire actual rifle ammo. Why do you want to pay for rifle ammo, yet yield pistol performance?

    So really, I just don't see the point of these AT ALL. They're worthless for serious or competitive target shooting, suboptimal for personal or home defense, hunting, or just about anything else.

    For "ha ha" value at the range. . .maybe. . .but do you really need to spend $1000 for that? Isn't there something else that's a better use of that money (eg a nice Colt Python or maybe a tricked out REAL .223 rifle)?

    IMHO: The only real-world application for these things is discreet high-profile dignitary protection; to be used by the folks very close to the protectee...and only to cover the retreat of said protectee to a safe location.

    For this stuff I use the Mp5k. I can conceal this under a jacket, and deploy it quickly. (ala the Secret Service Reagan assination attempt with the Uzi)

    The RRA piston pistol AR with the picatinny rail on the rear instead of the hanging-over buffer tube would be my choice if saddled with a pistol AR. One can sling it cleanly, and the foam-covered tube won't print or hang up on jackets.

    AR pistols sure can be conversation starters at the range, and a challenge to shoot metal targets at long diatances, but like with any specialty firearm a lot of times there are other things that can do a better job. HOWEVER, if it tickles your fancy go for it! [8D]

    I bought mine when they first came out and SBR'd it when the wait was still only about 3 months ... Took it out to the range once before I got my stamp but even bracing it with a sling it was as rufe-snow said; worthless.

    Now with a stock on it, it's my favorite SBR. It's been through a couple different but similar configurations to get it just the way I wanted it. Its more accurate than the 16" carbine, easy to clean, great trigger, easily maintains a 1" to 1.5" group @ 100 yards even with Silver Bear 62grain HP ... When I start cleaning out the safe, it will be the last one to go and even then hopefully it will just be passed down.

    A friend of mine loves the "odd ball pistols" like this - PTR 308, AR and the Sig 556. I've used them once in a while, I suppose having alot of T/C single shots makes me inclined to like them. I think they're OK at two things. Blasting away and just having some fun or, if properly set up, longer range shooting.

    By properly set up I would mean a good handgun scope and a good trigger with a solid rest. The 556 has a lousy trigger for target work. Were I going to get something like this it would be the RRA AR 15 type with no buffer tube. You can drop in a nice AR trigger and plink or target shoot all day long.

    I think the "red dot" set up on these things is a waste of time. The dot is too indistinct and not much of an aid unless all one's trying to do is kill gallon milk jugs at 50 yds or so.

    A handgun scope and some practice refining your scoped handgun shooting method I'll bet gets good 100 yd groups.

    [:(] hummmm, and here i always thought the standard 2-stage SiG-556 factory trigger was pretty nice, or at least as nice as a $100+ RRA 2-stage trigger.

    I like it fine on rifles. Just my preference but I think it takes too much work on a 556 pistol and find even the RRA 2 stage easier and crisper. Too each his own I suppose.
