I bought an XD 45 and I'm
having one heck of a time
pulling the slide back.
The spring is stronger than any other
45 I've ever owned.
Great trigger,heavy slide spring.
Am I just weak or are they
all this way?

So regular or small? I'd imagine the small compact one would be using seriously beefy springs to tame the recoil. I'm picturing duo spring contraption.
Get one of these Gripmaster http://www.amazon.com/Gripmaster-Hand-Exerciser/dp/B0085MX3SG and get working.
Also you might need to change your style of racking the slide. Pinch with your weak hand and push with your strong hand down. My bro has a similar issue.0 -

I shot my cousin's two weeks ago and didn't notice a big problem. It was stiffer than my usual 9mm but I just chalked that up to the pistol being new. It was the first 45ACP I've shot and I found it not nearly as obnoxious as I'd been tole 45's were. Not difficult to handle even with my arthritic hands. 0 -

A reduced power recoil spring can really help.. Most factory springs are over-kill..

Unfortunately, the lighter the slide, the heavier the springs need to be. Make it a shorter slide and you have less of a handle to grip. With a hammer gun, you can pull back the hammer and reduce the effort to pull the slide back. With a striker gun, not only do you have the recoil springs to fight, but the striker spring also. 0 -
My XD40 has a really strong spring. I think it's just part of the design. 0 -

Are you depressing the grip safety correctly? I was teaching at the range awhile back and a big guy could not reliably rack the slide on his XD. He wasn't gripping the gun correctly every time, so the grip safety wasn't disengaging all the time, which is required for the slide to rack. One major reason I don't own any XDs.0 -

I have a XDM 45 compact and don't think its that bad.Have you tried pushing forward with your strong hand and pulling back with your weak hand?My wife had trouble cycling her colt mustang till she learned how to do that. 0 -

Figured that was it. Which is one big reason I do not own any XDs. Any gun that you have to have a perfect grip on for it to function, is not suitable for self defense.0 -
