refinishing wood grips S&W 686
I want to refinish a set of factory wood combat grips for my SW 686. I have them ready for refinishing with all of the old varnish now gone. I am looking for suggestions whether to finish with just an oil finish or if I should use a varnish product. I want to get them close to original as I am able. What would you recommend?

I believe your grips are cocobolo, so they probably will not take an oil finish very well. I would try either a shellac or or a urethane varnish, something that is over the wood rather than in the wood.
If they are walnut grips, then use an oil - true oil, permalyn, linspeed all work great.[:)]0 -

Varnish would be close to original.. I've always thought the finish looked thick and glossy.. I prefer tung-oil, but a rubbed-in finish like Linspeed will give more sheen.. Tru-Oil will be even shinier.. I think you'll find the wood is Goncalo alves.. 0 -

As previously stated, S&W never offered Cocobolo grips. It was Goncalo alves...that included their combat grips.
I would not use any type of oil finish on these grips. I would use a high gloss poly, or a varnish. Oil could tend to make a a defensive gun slipery unser the right set of circumstances.

++1 on the Varnish. Any of the oil finishes could be slippery even on a checkered grip panel.. and on your handgun that's a very bad thing. 0 -
