Savage Mod. 93R17 Misfire

I have this Savage .17 rim fire that experiences an occasional misfire for no apparent reason.When the misfire occurs there is a small indent in the cartridge edge which indicates that there is something preventing the firing pin from a full hit. I cannot find any reason for the firing pin not to perform its' job all of the time.
Need some good ideas please.

  My first thought is the ammo. Try different brands and types of ammo to see if the problem persists.
  
  Years ago I had a High Standard .22 mag derringer. It was only reliable with Federal ammo. With other brands of ammo, their was constant FTF problems.
  
  EDIT #1, Make sure the chamber and leed area of the barrel is squeaky clean. Any fouling in these areas would cause misfires.

  the cartridge should DROP under it's own weight fully into the chamber. if the last .030 is snug then the firing pin will use most of its energy just pushing the cartridge into the chamber.

  Gunk in the firing pin slot or hole. If possible take the bolt apart to see if shavings, dried WD-40 (you don't use it do you?) or dirt is interfering with its travel.
  
  If you can't tear it down use carb cleaner down the hole, WEAR SAFTEY GLASSES the stuff has a way of squirting back into your face [:0][B)]. If you can flush out the hole what ever is in there may come out.

  besides ammo issue or cleaning bolt & firing pin i have had to grind down a tiny bit of the firing pin shoulder and touch up the pin head
