S&W 686 K or L frame?
Is a 686 a K or L frame, and are (square butt)K and L grip frames the same?

It's an L frame and yes, they're the same. 0 -
A 686 is an L frame. Grips for a K frame fit an L frame whether it's a square butt or round butt, makes no difference. The frames are not identical in that the L frame is heavier and designed for heavier recoil but the grip size between the K and L are the same.

586 and 686 revolvers are built on the L-frame.
K and L frame grips are the same, by design.
By design the the K/L grips also fit the Smith "X" frame, used for the gigantic SW .460 and .500 magnum revolvers.0 -
A K or L grip will also fit an X frame. 0
