    Just bought a Savage 99 in .308 W, very inexpensively. The receiver is marked "99E" and numbered A138xxx on the left. Lever-mounted safety, internal mag, case-hardened lever, no round counter. The SAVAGE99 website gives a 1913 date of manufacture, which is plainly wrong.

    The lever is very difficult to open through about 2/3 of its range. Closing from full open starts easily, but stiffens about 1/3 into the closing cycle, and remains difficult right up until the bolt tilts straight at lock up. "Difficult" and "stiff" mean I can't operate the lever without turning the rifle to grasp the outside of the lever and pulling outward. The problem is the same cycling empty or cycling rounds from the mag. Other than the stiffness in operating, rounds feed and eject perfectly. I have not yet fired the rifle. I removed the buttstock to examine the action - nothing looks broken and the action is not dirty.

    I'm not enough of a marksman to rely on never needing a quick follow-up shot, so any suggestion on the cause/cure?


    Can anyone suggest how I run down the year of manufacture?

    If the 1927 date is correct I'm thinking it's a Model 99H Carbine (made 1923-40 bluebook). To bad it lost the tang sight.

    The buttplate should be the curved carbine style rather than the flat style and the sling mount is aftermarket. Personally, I wouldn't bid unless I could see the SN markings in the stock, forearm and buttplate like they should be. SN's were marked on all three of those parts till "about 1950" per page 3-2 of "The Ninety-Nine" by Doug Murray.

    I agree with the yooper, plus it is priced a tad high. In my area it would be asking maybe $425-$450, and probably getting less. .30-30 is the most common caliber by far.

    Yea I know it is high I am just trying to ge tan idea o nthis one.. We will have no trouble selling this gun in the shop for $500-$700..
