  at one time that model came with 2 barrels 9mm and a 30 luger

  I believe it was the Ruger P89X that came with the two barrel setup, 9mm and .30 Luger. Each barrel only used one spring however, they were different weights and if I recall they also each had their own guide rod which I couldn't figure out why.
  
  I realize this doesn't answer the OP's original question, I think he is questioning why there are two springs operating together in the P95. I cannot answer that.

  Recoil springs serve 2 functions one is to slow the slide down during recoil and the other is to strip the top round off the magazine an chamber it in the barrel you can only make a spring so strong given a certain diameter as well as diameter of the wire it self. a number of pistols used 2 springs .

  I don't know why, from a specific design/engineering perspective why the designers of this gun went with a two spring system.
  
  But, in GENERAL as usual, Perry Shooter has it right.
  
  There is only so much stiffness you can put in a standard spring. If you need to make a spring SHORTER yet retain the same response, then you have to make the spring wire THICKER to compensate. After a while, you have to make the spring wire so thick that doing so presents its own set of issues.
  
  Instead of using super-thick springs, most of the high-impulse guns that are shortened in overall length use these dual capture spring systems instead, eg: the subcompact Glocks, the super-chopped down 3" .45s (like the Detonics), etc. IIRC, there is one in the Kel-Tec 3at pocket .380ACP pistol too.
  
  These give the overall effect of a single stiffer spring, but without some of the technical issues associated with really stiff springs.
  
  
  
  Some people believe that dual spring systems reduce felt recoil, but I'm skeptical.
  
  Also in general, the dual-spring systems tend not to be as durable as regular single-coil springs, and require more frequent changing.
