17 hmr ---split cases

Are these rounds bad about splitting?
I am shooting federal ammo out of a savage .
shot 25 rounds and had 3 cases split.
Ammo, gun, or?

  My Savage has never split a case. After a lot of trials, I shoot Hornady 17grain ammo. Mine doesn't like 20 grain as well.

  New gun? Old gun? When was the last time it was cleaned?
  
  That seems to be the common denominator with the ultra small bores, like the 14's, 17's, and 20's. The more they are fouled the higher the pressures.
  
  That is in fact, pretty much what Remington's recall was all about on their 597 semi-auto in 17HMR. Not cleaned frequently enough, the pressures elevated enough to prematurely open the action, while there was still dangerous pressures lurking.
  
  Give it a good cleaning, and see if it happens within say the next 50 rounds. If so, then you might have a larger than normal chamber.

  BTW, I run a CZ-453 Varmint, and run Hornady, or CCI ammo thru it. I usually use the 20 grainer's, as I sometimes use it for crop destruction permits(works great with proper bullet placement out to 100 yards or so). I have never split a case in that or my Savage 30G single shot.

  Maybe a bad lot of brass. Have you tried some other brand of ammo? +1 cleaning never hurts. Aside from the split any lumps in the spent case?

  REMINGTON IS A SLOW LEARNER[:(] The same thing happened with the model 591/592 5MM years ago clean the barrel problem goes away.

  I had the same problem with Hornady ammo in my Ruger 77/22, but in my case 50% of the cases split. This happened when the rifle was new and it seemed to be only with a specific lot of Hornady ammo. Hornady claimed it was a manufacturing defect. It didn't seem to affect accuracy, but it was disconcerting.

  I had a brand new Savage Model 24 .22 Mag/20 gauge that split the rims off every .22 Mag I fired.

  I have an SAVAGE M-93 and a RUGER 10/22 in 17HMR, NO PROBLINs with either.
  I use WINCHESTER SUPER X 20gr. JHP
  My next order I am going to WINCHESTER SUPREME JHP.

  Never had a split case in my Savage either.

  I'll clean it and try Hornady ammo this weekend .
  The gun has only had 2 boxes of ammo shot through it .

  Though it might happen the next time I shoot it, I've never had a split (or any other case failure) in my Ruger 77/17HMR. I shoot Hornady exclusively but my Son shoots 3-4 brands and bullet weights and hasn't reported any such problems.
