    Also, can anyone tell me what the numbers 398 XXX indicate in photo #40? It may seem like a dumb question, but this is how I learn. Thanks.

    I don't know beans about the rifle. For that kind of money though I would dam sure verify the factory/Cody? letter is legit, before buying it. Their are to many computer savvy folks out there who could knock out a letter like that using laser printers and high quality copiers, in less then a hour.

    Well, as rufe says, the rifle looked very nice, and hopefully the letter was checked out.

    The seller, themselves were not Winchester savvy. They made mention of the Madis writings, and stated that the book stated that 1 out of 600 had special wood, and 1 out of 700 had checkering...etc. All of those numbers seem very low, as there were the "1 of 1000", and "1 of 100" series, which all that were produced had special wood nd checkering, let alone pistol griped stocks, and such. That is not to mention the special order rifles like this one. While it was a nice rifle, it was not as "RARE" as the seller led it to be, other than condition...about 80 percent, IMHO.

    Assembly numbers shown in pic 40 & 41 and the xxx signifies the grade of wood. Bert will be able to add some detailed info to this for you. The gun's serial number is in pic # 50, but I can't make it out.

    That rifle is absolutely factory original, and the letter is perfectly legitimate.

    The "348 XXX" on the lower tang is the assembly number and the grade of the walunt stocks.
