Shortening a shotgun barrel ?

Lets say you have a Remington 28ga 26" barrel in modified choke. What choke will it be if you cut the barrel down to 18.5"? improved cyl or more open then that? Looking to make a short Grouse barrel.
Thanks for any info.

  just a guess but I would say cylinder bore.....or to answer your question yes more open than improved.

  Now, you could cut it down, than thread it (assuming enough wall thickness) for interchangeable choke tubes.
  
  Now a word of advise from a old skeet shooter, the shorter barrel will start swinging faster BUT it will also stop just as fast. IOW you'll end up shooting behind most of the birds.

  I think it would be cylinder bore. I like 20 inch with screw in chokes. My guess is you will not be happy hunting without some choke.

  The choke is at the end of the barrel.
  If you cut off the end of the barrel. . .no more choke.
  What you are left with is "no choke", aka "cylinder".
  
  There are things you might be able to do to put some choke into a cylinder bore barrel, but whether or not doing them is worthwhile, that's a whole other matter.

  all modern chokes are in the last 2" (or so) of the barrel, cut any more than that and you have a straight cylinder bore.

  remington 28ga barrels are very hard to find do you really want to cut it??

  Once you get rid of the 2-3 inches of barrel that the choke is in, it becomes cylinder bore.
  
  You are correct, that the 28 gauge makes a splended grouse gun. I have a Franchi 48 AL, in 28 gauge with the choke tube system from Franchi. It weighs about 4 1/2 pounds with its 26 inch barrel.

  I'd look around for a damaged or rusted barrel to cut if it were me.
  Another option would be to have the choke"opened up" by a gunsmith if you can live with the 26" but more open choke.
