Ruger LCR
I'm new to fire arms (5 months) so please forgive any thing really stupid while I ramp up. I just purchased a Ruger LCR rated for +P .38 Special ammo. It's just for target use. Can I load .38 Special instead? The +P version appears to be very expensive. Thanks!

I have the 357 mag version. It has become my daily carry gun, with Gold Dot 357 Short Barrel ammo in it. That ammo chronos right at 1000 FPS at 7 feet out of my LCR. The gun has a very nice trigger pull and is as accurate as you are. 0 -
I like the little guy. I put .38sp in it at the range but carry it with .38+. I also have the other little Ruger and carry it in my pocket with a spare mag in the other pocket. I have become a Ruger fan, obviously. They are both light and easy to CC. 0 -
I have not had a chance to shoot one, but I've heard nothing but good things about them from several people who have them since they came out. You'll be well served with one if you so choose. 0 -
I have been a staunch S&W fan for years, always carried a 642 S&W. Bought a Ruger LCR 38 a few months ago, took it out to the range and compared it side by side with my 642. The Ruger has a smoother, lighter trigger pull, the trigger is wider and more comfortable, the grips on the Ruger are a better design and the guns shoots right to point of aim. I was able to obtain more center mass hits, rapid fire, at self defense distances with the LCR as opposed to the S&W. I have retired my 642 and now the LCR is my primary, warm weather carry weapon. (My LCR has a front night sight as well). 0 -
I'm confused on the .357 and .38 spec +p.Why not get the .357 gun and use regular .38's for less recoil?I'M THINKING ABOUT THE STAINLESS FRAME IN THE .357 VERSUS ALUMINUM IN THE .38 SPEC + P. 0 -
Hawkshaw, I like mine so much I plan on getting another. The only thing I dislike about it is the internal lock (but got over that once I shot it). Also, mine rattles when shaken and probably has to do with the lock. It's a great little shooter for a snubbie. Awesome trigger, very light, and I like the Houge rubber grips.
Tocamoha, for me personally, the extra 4 onces of weight was not worth the tradeoff for the 357 chambering. Also, I shot one of the LCR 357 and it was not comfortable (for me) in such a lightweight revolver, YMMV. The 38 is under rated in my opinion and would not think twice to carry it unless I was hiking in bear country.0 -

The 38+P is a few ounces lighter, so if you want the lightest possible go with that. I got the 357 so I can shoot both.0 -
The LCR in .357 is more expensive (a .38 with night (front) sight is MSRP at $25 less than the magnum basic model, basic .38 is $75 less) and 3+ oz heavier. While there is more power (even in a 2" barrel) in a magnum round, and in a pinch you could use .38 or .357, I have yet to find anyone who will puposely go out and shoot enough full-house .357 rounds to become proficient with these small-frame guns. Heck, my 2.5" M-19 or 2" VH Dan Wesson are substantially heavier than the LCR's, and they're a handful with magnums.
I will bet that easily 95% of the buyers that get a small frame .357 magnum fire a box (or less) of the heavy-kickers, then retire the magnum rounds for .38's when they become decidely "unfun" to shoot. IMO Hawkshaw, save the $$ and go with the LCR .38 you inquired about.0 -

Thanks for the reviews. I too was on the fence and will now settle in the +P 38SPL.
Given an acceptable caliber, weight and size trump all other factors for an everyday carry piece.0
