what is a mill dot cross hair

Ipicked up a varmit scope with a mill Dot cross hair. How do you use this type of cross hair.I think it has little dots on the cross hair's. thanks for any input on this

  Without getting too complicated, the width of the dots and distances between the dots are carefully calibrated, so that if you know what you are doing, you can use these to estimate range to your target.
  
  As a secondary use, you can calibrate your bullet drop to the graduated dots to serve as multiple aiming points to compensate for drop over distance. You can also do the same horizontally to compensate for wind drift.
  
  "Mil", in this case doesn't stand for "military" but rather "miliradian" and it represents an angle of measure. Snipers really like these mil-dot reticles, and they're becoming more and more popular with long-distance shooters in general.

  I use one on a CZ452, with the gun being zeroed at 50 yds. The first dot below the crosshair gives an 80 yard zero, and the second dot down, is 100. The dots on mine cover one MOA, great for starlings and similar targets which get pretty small at any distance.
