Buehler Scope Base
I've never used Buehler bases before, but have one on a 7X57 (which I may buy) using a fixed 6X Bausch and Lomb scope which is not adjustable. Therefore, all windage and elevation adjustments must be made on the base. My questions concern the operation and adjustment of the base. Specifically:
- Windage is controlled by two opposing horizontal screws (one on each side of the base, much like Leupold), and the base itself is indexed. Do the screws interact to lock the windage? That is, if I turn one to the left, must I turn the opposing screw to the right an equal distance, thereby tightening the windage setting? If so, this seems an inexact adjustment (?)... is this the correct procedure?
- Elevation is controlled by two dial (wheel) adjustments. The higher (and smaller) of the two is indexed and seems to control elevation. What is the purpose of the lower (and larger) dial/wheel? I thought it would lock the setting of the smaller dial - but tightening / loosening it causes some elevation change as well. How do these two dials interact to contol and maintain elevation setting?
- Can I (reasonably) expect the base mounting holes to be spaced appropriately for other conventional bases? I may decide to buy the rifle and replace the bases... really don't want to go to a gunsmith to drill and tap, etc.
Any other input/suggestions/instructions would be appreciated. I fired 12 rounds today trying to zero, and managed to find a tight 26" pattern at 100 yards. At this rate, its gonna take 50 rounds to get zeroed.

sounds like your talking about the old microdial buehler base and ring setup. youll have to research the web for an old brochure or instruction sheet to answer your question.
In the meantime why dont you enlighten us about the make and model of the rifle so we can help you with "part 2" answers.0 -
The answer to your windage question is ,yes, if you back one screw out, you must tighten the other (as you said, much like Leupold).
The answer to your elevation question is: Much like the windage screws, if you turn the top wheel, say, counter-clockwise--you then must turn the bottom wheel counter-clockwise, also, to clamp the rear of the base between the wheels. All threads are right hand so you can easily figure which way is up or left or whatever. Actually it's a pretty good system and both your scope and mount are high quality even though approaching antique, but then, so's the 7x57 cartridge.0 -

That's exactly what I think it is. I spent 3 hours searching for some level of detail information - couldn't find anything.
Rifle is a FN 7X57 - I posted a couple of questions about it last week. Judging from serial number, manufactured late 1950s. Scope is a B&L fixed 6 power, base & rings as above. My estimate is it was purchased around 1960, scope mounted and it went into a rack. May have been fired a few times (?) but certainly never seriously used. Bluing is perfect, stock 98% - a couple of light marks in the finish, not thru to the wood, extractor shows no scratches or wear of any kind. Most of the moving parts were stiff with dried oil/lubricant.
Friend of mine bought it at an estate sale - wants to make a little on it (negotiations continue), but, in the meantime, he loaned me the rifle and a set of dies so I could check it out. Hate to blow 50 rounds thru it just gettting the scope zeroed (or close), but that's the alternative if I can't get any information.
No pics, though, so I realize it really only exists here in my hand... which is OK.0 -

The light just came on. Had to go look at the wheels and base - and that makes it clear. Looks like a painstaking process to adjust to zero... makes adjustable scopes look really good. Thanks for the help.
I realize its an old cartridge, scope, etc-- but fun to tinker with, and nice to shoot.0
